What are elastomers?

The hard segments influence properties like heat resistance, oil and solvent resistance, tear strength, and tensile strength. On the other hand, the soft segments impact compression set, low-temperature performance, and impact resistance.

The ratio of hard and soft segments in elastomers drives their hardness, modulus, and flexibility. This unique combination of properties makes elastomers incredibly versatile and suitable for a wide range of applications.

 

Types of elastomers and their applications

  • Thermoplastic Polyolefin (TPO): TPO is known for its low cost, wide range of flexibility, and good weathering resistance. It's commonly used in automotive parts like bumpers and interior trims, providing durability and cost-effectiveness.
  • Thermoplastic Styrenic (TPS): TPS offers low density, good compression set, and excellent flexibility at low temperatures. These properties make TPS ideal for shoe soles and other footwear components, ensuring comfort and performance.
  • Thermoplastic Vulcanizate (TPV): TPV combines the best properties of rubber and plastics, offering a wide operating temperature window and good oil resistance. It's widely used in automotive, providing very good abrasion resistance, high tear, puncture, and tensile strength, good flexibility at low temperatures and excellent long-term aging stability.
  • Thermoplastic Polyurethane (TPU): TPU is known for its high tear, puncture, and tensile strength. It's used in sports equipment like running shoes and protective gear, ensuring durability and performance.
  • Thermoplastic Co-polyester (TPC): TPC offers excellent flex fatigue resistance and good hydrolysis resistance. These properties make TPC suitable for aerospace applications, where materials need to withstand extreme conditions.
